Emre obtained his Bachelor’s degree at the Istanbul University Law Faculty in 1999. After completing his legal internship at the Bilgen Law Office in 1999 – 2000, he became a research assistant at the Private International Law Department of the Istanbul University Law School in December 2000 and became an Assistant Professor in 2010, an Associate Professor in 2013 and a full Professor in 2019 at the same department.
Emre has been teaching Private International Law for the candidates of bachelors at the Istanbul University Law School. He also taught Private International Law at the Kültür University Law School, the Uludağ University Law School and a guest lecturer at Beykent University Law School. He specializes in teaching: International Arbitration, International Civil Procedure Law and International Family Law, for the candidates of LL.M and PhD degrees at the Istanbul University Social Sciences Institute.
His principal area of expertise is Private International Law. He is one of the authors of the “Milletlerarası Özel Hukuk” (Private International Law) and of the “Milletlerarası Özel Hukuk Pratik Çalışma Kitabı” (Private International Law Applied Courses). He is also one of the editors of the “Türk Milletlerarası Özel Hukuk Mevzuatı” (Turkish Private International Law Regulations). He published the book titled “Milletlerarası Özel Hukukta Tüzel Kişilik Perdesinin Kaldırılması” (Piercing the Corporate Veil in Private International Law) in 2011. Further to this, Emre has published several articles and book chapters on Private International law.
Emre’s specialty is “International Commercial Arbitration” and his PHD thesis titled- “Extension of Arbitration Agreements to Non-Signatories in International Commercial Arbitration”. Emre has published several books, book chapters and articles on International Commercial Arbitration such as the chapter titled “Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards” in the book titled “Arbitration in Turkey” published by Wolter Kluwer”.
Besides his academic background, Emre has also gained vast experience on the practice of his areas of expertise, and often called upon to act as a legal advisor or a legal expert appointed by the parties or by the court.
Emre has been a member of the Consultative Committee of the Istanbul Arbitration Centre (ISTAC) since 2015 and listed in the Arbitrators List of the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce Arbitration and Mediation Centre (ITOTAM). He acts as an arbitrator in ad hoc or institutional arbitration cases.
Prof. Dr. Emre Esen has been a member of Istanbul Bar since 2000.
